New insights into Oprah’s spiritual beliefs & spirituality as she answers the biggest question from her online class. Oprah tells spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, “Jesus didn’t come to start Christianity.”
Having read the book God vs. Religion – Experience A Great Awakening, I agree wholeheartedly with Oprah and acknowledge the many misrepresentations of the divine by religious sects and denominations.
Eckhart Tolle wisely said when reviewing chapter 1 with Oprah on their online class: “Religion can be an open doorway into spirituality and religion can be a closed door that prevents you from going deeper.”
Tolle who had contemplated suicide during a dark time of his life accidentally experienced an inner transformation while reading a copy of the New Testament which he got at his mother’s place.
The biggest question Oprah and Tolle were asked during chapter 1 of their online class dealt with reconciling one’s religion with spirituality. Oprah and Eckhart repeatedly stated their purpose was not to add new information or beliefs to one’s mind, but rather bring about a shift in consciousness and facilitate a personal awakening.
Oprah told a personal story from her Baptist upbringing during which she was in church (around the age of 27 or 28 years of age) and was caught up in the rapture of the moment until she heard her Pastor say, “The Lord thy God is a jealous God.”
Oprah’s immediate inward response was, “God is jealous of me?”
It was then Oprah began searching for something more remembering that God is love, omnipresent, and omniscient. “I asked God to use me, that has been my prayer for many years,” Oprah conveyed.
When counseling one of her callers named Erika from Landstuhl, Germany, Oprah revealed how she herself let go of the guilt when she didn’t make it to church. Answering from the heart, Oprah wisely said: “God cannot be contained in a church and doesn’t just want to be served in a church.”
Tolle agreed warning some 700,000 participants in the online course to “not become dependent upon any group,” but rather live fully present everyday.
Undoubtedly the road to hell is paved with good intentions, as Tolle himself acknowledged.
I personally believe religion has poisoned the minds of so many while misrepresenting the heart of God to humanity. Religion is often frigid and rigid, hindering the human spirit from breathing and believing.
Concerning Oprah, I would say God is not jealous of Oprah, but rather lovingly jealous for her. Scripture states repeatedly that God in His great love for His children, loves and watches over them jealously.
Religion was man’s futile creation and attempt to connect with the divine. God however desires relationship with mankind not religious conformance. God is free and fun, whereas religion is back breaking and boring.
What people believe and adhere to can easily become a source of pride and divisive. One’s ideology be it political, national, or religious is utterly meaningless apart from meaningful and life giving relationship with one’s Creator. When we learn to rest and receive God’s unconditional love for us, we then can freely and unconditionally love one another bringing peace to earth.
